I was curious nearly this too even though I accept 2 trailers. (i for gunkhole other for hauling) There isn't an annual inspection for a trailer, only they do have to have a tag and believe it or not Mecklenburg county will transport you a property taxation neb for it. In fact I call back you will have to declare it with the local tax office. It's a flake ridiculous equally I get a bill from the revenue enhancement role where the tax is less than $two then I suspect information technology costs them more than to send the bill and collect the tax. None the less, I couldn't find anything specific on the NCDOT site except for "Individuals coming from a state that does not title and register trailers would need to call 919-715-7000." I know that people build their own as I've seen numerous ones around here, and at that place is a guy in Lincolnton that builds trailers for sale. |

For a home congenital trailer caput to the tag role and tell them you want to register a home built trailer. They will inquire a few questions then effect you lot a vin number and form to have signed past Highway Patrolman. You have to get the trailer tongue and axle stamped with the vin number. You then take it to a Highway Patrol office for them to audit the stamps, check the lights etc.. If it all works they sign the form and you accept it back to the license plate role and they'll become you a championship and tag. It's a hurting in the arse and will cost ya virtually $150.00! |

If I buy a trailer and get information technology all registered etc. Then I build a mini camper on information technology. Is that legal / Does it get grandfathered? How would they know if not? |

I had a friend that bought a trailer a while back, registered it and put a plate on it. They sent him a lovely tax nib of around $100 each year. The trailer itself but price $900. So over 9 years he would pay the cost of the trailer over. That trailer got stolen. No one tin can help find information technology, it'due south lost. He thought it was covered on his auto policy only it wasn't. Then the second time around, he bought another trailer, he skipped bothering to register it. He has paperwork on it that shows he paid for it, but otherwise in that location are no tags. He drives it around all over the place, right in front end of the police and has never been stopped or questioned...I'thou sure merely like the people driving around with his old trailer. The advantage being if y'all don't register the trailer, unless yous arrive an accident with it or get pulled over for any other reason, the constabulary won't bother y'all and about importantly you won't have to pay the registration fee, the annual tag fee or the annual property revenue enhancement fees. You should've taken pictures of the building of the trailer to prove that you lot made it. In theory all you would have to say if you got pulled over, would be that you were on you lot planned to get it registered tomorrow... So in my opinion, the question is, practise y'all plan to insure the trailer? If so you lot volition take to pay for all the other extras. If you lot don't plan to insure it and just purchase a really good lock, and then I don't think it's worth it to jump through all the hoops... simply my 2 cents. I have potent negative feelings towards the charging of holding tax each year on things like our cars and so if I can avoid it I will. I would consider a motility to SC next fourth dimension I move if I tin avert tax like that. It's double taxation in my opinion. |
